FPGA project

I am currently deciding on a project for my Masters degree in Engineering, I have 2 options both involving FPGAs

1. Implementation of Eliptic Curve cryptography of 192bits in FPGA, goal to encode / decode 200 RFID tags per second

2. Implemetation of high speed filters for use in RFID reciever frontends also on FPGA.

My question is, if these projects find practical applications outside of the academic environment.

RFID is pretty hot those days. I think what you learn from the class will be useful later on.
