Loud intermittent pop

hassan1980 says...

This topic is the continuation of a topic that I mistakenly called, "No power amp output, WT500."
The real problem is a loud intermittent POP coming through the speaker from my WT500. It first happens a couple of minutes after the amp has been turned on.
Mr. C suggested I check the 5-watt power resistors on the preamp board. Today I found that the solder joints for these resistors were seriously fried. I will repair these joints and let the forum know if that actually solves the popping problem.

A little more info on troubleshooting popping is available here: http://www.geofex.com/ampdbug/popping.htm
This link mentions heat from power-supply dropping resistors melting the solder joints, which is what appears to be happening in my amp.
This is a thermal-management problem that I will assume Eden has solved by now. Meanwhile, I'm considering drilling some ventilation holes directly under these problem solder joints to try to get some more cooling to them. Anybody have any experience with this?

I had a similar problem with some Yamaha power amps installed in a poorly ventilated rack - all the solder joints in the top amp melted down. As it died, the amp sent a big current spike to the speakers and one of the horn drivers exlpoded like a grenade!

In your case, is it possible to add some sort of heatsink to the area? I've seen various sorts of small heatsinks that can be attached directly to components, or perhaps there's some way yo can attach a small piece of metal to disperse the heat.
Is the fan functioning OK?
