Manufacturer quality for IC?

oneshotnike says...

Hi,

In general, is there any quality difference between IC Manufacturers
that are known, or what is your opinion? I? not looking to slam anyone, but
I want the best IC chips, and it seems like not all IC manufactures have the same quality.

For example I was looking at a Phillips IC and some IC chips of the same age and type from other manufacturers. The Phillips chip, looked soooo much better, the body of the chip looked premium, the silkscreen was perfect. The legs(pins) on the IC looked heavy duty and were tinned (If that? the correct term) much better. It just looked, and presented itself like a high quality chip (Visualy). I have no idea about the functionality, which is in fact, the most important thing, regardless if the chip is ugly.

I know many vendor's make high quality chips, that don't look as good as others,
But... There was so much visual difference and ic pin/leg quality difference that
it prompted me to ask the question.

What is your opinion / experience in this area?

Maybe there are some things a person should stay away from ??

Thanks,
-Areal

it is EXTREMELY difficult to say anything in general about any company because
the products they make vary from flawed to excellent almost with every single
company out there.

I remember from my days as a Commodore Service technician that
Ram-Circuits from OKI where the ones to blow every time a defective
Commodore 64 came in, and it was almost a sure fire every time.

However - Oki makes lots of really good quality stuff today so it's
very difficult to say anything relating to my experience from yesteryears.

I'm not a service tech anymore, heck...I'm in advertising as a graphics artist today.
But still..if you know me from the forum and have seen my hefty component collections
then you know that a hobby like that...just don't walk away because the stores does.

So.....speaking from my own experience with repairing lot's of stuff over the
years, all the company produce one or another component that have some kind
of weakness at some time. Example...I've repaired numerous switchmode PSU's
and some transistors & diodes have a way of dying in these...if they are
of a certain brand from a certain time (eg..the 80's) ..a little later...then they
are the very best I've seen....it could very well also be the actual construction
of the PSU that places an unnecessary load on it because of a design flaw
and whatnot.

Ya get it? You can't guarantee anything! There are too many components
to count...and too much for this ol'geezer to remember, so just buy what you
need and make sure you construct your stuff properly, measure a lot....then
measure a lot again. Thats one of the reasons I like to have so much test-gear
because that way I can constantly monitor whatever I do ...with whatever
component I use...

Honestly...I can't even remembering blowing ANYTHING up for YEARS.
heck....10-20 years....because I use test-instruments to always monitor whatever
I construct...that way I ensure that things are always within spec. and that
no overload occur, no latchups, overheating, reverse-effect...etc...etc
so it simply WON't happen.
